Between Dreams

What does it feel like to step inside a dream? What do sleep and dreams sound like? Between Dreams is an A/V performance and audiovisual installation by Patrick Trudeau and Claire Kenway. Following the brainwave patterns that occur during different sleep phases, descending from wakefulness into NREM and Delta, shifting into dreams and back again—sleep cycles are reimagined as moving images and sound. Consisting of algorithmically generated cycles of sound and music, it is inspired by the natural variation of Circadian Rhythms: the daily cadences that govern and regulate sleep, wakefulness, alertness, and dreams.

Presented as an A/V performance at Elektra Montreal (2023) and an immersive installation at MUTEK Mexico (2024), the research and creation for the original versions of this project were funded by Canada Council For the Arts. Between Dreams is designed to serve as a meeting place, a napping space, and a place of solace, relaxation and reflection.
